Q: What sets your soap and salves apart? Why not buy from other vendors or the supermarket?
A: We craft our line of body soaps with 100% full fat, raw goat milk. While there is water naturally present in goat milk, we do not add any additional water to our formula The goat milk soap industry is loosely regulated and states that as long as you have 1% goat milk (fresh, pasteurized, or powdered) in your batter, you can call it goat milk soap.
We grow and forage most of the herbs for our salves, balms, and oils right here on the farm! The exception is the arnica (Heterotheca inuloides) that we use in our Massage Oil. It grows in an arid, mountainous climate so we import ours from Mexico.
We have been making and using these products for decades and continue to make them in small batches, by hand, with love and care.
Q: I am worried about this soap being harsh on my skin because I see sodium hydroxide (lye) on the label.
A: Do not worry! Our soaps are extremely gentle and nourishing to the skin. Making true soap involves a chemical reaction. There is no lye in the finished product. In order to be called “soap” fats must be combined with lye, the reactant that turns the fats into soap.
Q: How long have you been making soaps and salves?
A: I started making salves in the early 1990's. We lived in Asheville at the time and I was able to tap into the many local resources in herbalism. I started making soap in 2008. I wanted to create products that were gentle on the skin and free from ingredients I could not pronounce. Our family and friends enjoyed using my homemade soaps for decades. When I retired from teaching in 2024, I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do, and many friends and family members suggested I sell my soaps and salves to the public and here we are!
Q: Are your products free of parabens, phthalates, and other harmful ingredients?
A: Yes! Remember that I make soaps and salves with my own family’s use in mind. I buy organic ingredients whenever feasible. I only purchase essential oils and fragrance oils that are manufactured in the USA and have undergone rigorous safety testing. All of our products meet strict IFRA (International Fragrance Association) guidelines. International Fragrance Association (IFRA) | IFRA Our colorants come from nature as we use clays such as French green clay, Moroccan red clay, kelp, turmeric, cocoa powder, spirulina and more. Occasionally we use mica powders to provide more vivid colors. We source them from reputable companies who guarantee they are cosmetic grade, ethically manufactured, and lead free.
Q: Does your goat milk come from your own goats?
A: Not yet, but plans are in the works. Two of our does are just now old enough to breed safely and we plan on breeding them Fall 2026 for the Spring 2027 kidding season. Our other three does will be reading the following year. Currently I source my fresh, raw, unpasteurized, full fat goat milk from nearby small family farms.
Q: How long does a bar of soap last?
A: Keeping it dry in between uses and away from water and moisture will help prolong your soap. Be sure to place it on a raised tray with drainage holes.
We share a bar of soap. Depending on the season, and how much we are working outside, one bar lasts for the two of us between 2-4 weeks!
Q: Do you offer farm tours to the public?
A: Not at this time due to insurance and liability reasons. Our farm is a micro farm on just under 4 acres. We do hope to offer “goat cams” at some time in the future to be able to see what our herd is up to in real time! Stay tuned!
